ACCIDENT AT KILLYBEGS

A boy about ten years of age named McGinley, who was residing with his grandfather at Conlin, Killybegs, was, during the first week in September 1874, thrown by a horse which he was riding, and killed on the spot. His parents, who some time ago, went to America, had forwarded £15 to have the boy fitted out and sent to them, but, just five days before that on which he was to leave, the sad accident occurred which deprived him of life.

  1. Hi My great grandfather was Condy Callaghan (son of James) from Conlin who married into Fintra. Growing up we heard the story that Condy had brothers and sisters who went to the USA. There was a story that “a lovely cousin” was thrown from a horse and killed while his parents were in America. We never heard any name for this boy and could never verify the story – reading this is fascinating and I wonder where you got your information from. I would love to try to make a connection. Cannot thank you enough for all your great work making the past come alive for future generations. Keep up the good work. Patricia Hurley (nee O’Callaghan)

  2. Hi My great grandfather was Condy Callaghan of Cunlin son of James and Catherine (McHugh). Condy married Mary McDermott of Gortnagolan in 1869 and moved to Fintra. My father told us that Condy had brothers and sisters in the US and that a nephew that was home without parents, was killed when he fell from a horse. This sounds like it was him – Condy’s sister Bridget was married to Hugh McGinty and they were in US – so I think this child was McGinty not McGinly.
